Spring Fling a Great Success!

There wasn't a breath of wind or a drop of rain for our major fundraiser of this year; quite the contrast from last year when we had to contend with wind and rain!

Our Spring Fling Ball took place on Thursday, March 3. The evening was beautiful, the setting at Real de Chapala full of the colors of spring, and everyone had a good time. Three hundred generous guests made major contributions to the Live and Silent Auctions and proceeds from the evening as a whole came in at the 319,000 peso mark. Click here to review the final financial report.

The organizing tour de force behind the evening was Kari Higgins and Jane Hainsworth, along with an excellent team of hardworking volunteers.

The evening was sponsored by Siete Leguas Tequila, e2energias and Weber Barbecues.

Some guests and volunteers really got into the spirit of the evening and came wearing gorgeous hats decorated with extravaganzas of flowers as can be seen in the photo above.

2011 Chili Cookoff

After selling out last year's Trivia Quiz Night, it was decided to offer two sessions this year at the Real de Chapala--one in the afternoon and another in the evening (with different questions, of course!). The facilities at the hotel were superb and Mr. Soto from Guadalajara provided 8 projectors and screens so that everyone had an excellent view of the questions and responses.

In both sessions, each table had eight people working together as a team to either recall or deduce the correct answer to a wide variety of multiple-choice questions in the areas of movies, popular music, history, geography and literature. Adding to the excitement, the current standings were posted each round as the match progressed. The first-place team changed frequently, so each point meant a lot.

One tricky question that only one team got right was "Which writer was a wise investor and left an estate worth 50 million dollars?" and one that all the teams got right was "Who was the voice of Woody in 'Toy Story'?"

In the afternoon session, the sharpest minds belonged to Los Sabelotodos who racked up 48 points out of a possible 80. The Wild Cards placed second and third-place went to Minutia.

In the evening session, after 8 rounds of competition the champions were the Mensa Wannabes who correctly answered 52 of the 80 questions. The Great Pretenders came in second, and Smarty Pants placed third.

Thanks to everyone who participated! It was great fun and, of course, all the proceeds -- over 35,000 pesos -- will be going to benefit the children in our program. By the way, the wise investor was Voltaire and the voice of Woody was Tom Hanks.

Rabbie Burns Night a Great Success

The Ajijic Scottish Country Dancers.

The birthday of Rabbie Burns was celebrated in grand style at the Chapala Golf & Country Club on January 25, 2011. The Ajijic Scottish Dancers along with pipers Pat Taylor and Keith Crockatt provided lively entertainment for the capacity crowd of 156 people.

Maureen Downes (L) and Norma Thomson display the haggis.

A superb haggis was prepared by Maureen Downes and Norma Thomson and was sampled by all who attended. The piping in of the haggis was one of the high points of the program. Mae Bishop, a professional singer from Scotland, also led a community sing-along.

A wonderful time was had by all. The event was held for the benefit of Niños Incapacitados and the proceeds from the evening --29,417 pesos-- were donated to support our program of providing help with medical expenses of poor children who would not otherwise be able to receive needed medical care. Thanks to all who attended!

Hasbro Donates Popular Toys to Niños

As he did last year, physician Bob Schemmer, a Niños Incapacitados supporter and volunteer, made contact with Hasbro de México and arranged a donation of over 300 toys and games to Niños Incapacitados for distribution to "our" kids. At last week's clinics, all the kids received an age-appropriate gift. Those who missed out will receive their gifts at the January 5 clinics--one day ahead of the Day of the Kings, a traditional day to exchange gifts in Mexico.

The boys loved the Cyclops figures, the Tonka trucks and Spiderman on a motorbike and the girls loved the dolls, purses and puzzles. Many thanks to Bob for his efforts and to Hasbro de México for their generous donation which was joyfully appreciated by all the children!

New Corporate Sponsor

e2Energias is a green and generous solar company in Guadalajara. And they're a brand new corporate sponsor of Niños Incapacitados. e2Energia's owner Guillermo Corona, and his partner Frank Weiss, have offered, following a suggestion by Niños volunteer Kari Higgins, to donate $10.00 USD to Niños for every module they install at Lakeside.

The idea was born when they were working on a system for the Higgins in Rancho del Oro. Their first donation was for a very welcome $440 USD and they have gone on to donate an additional $840 USD from other installations in the Lakeside area. "We are amazed by the work done by Niños Incapacitados," Guillermo said, "and very much want to support them."
